The set of Kamikazari (hair ornament), which includes a hair stick and a comb, is in its original case. Inside, it bears the name “Tamehan”, the shop in Kyoto that sold this set. It is no longer in business. Each ornament is embellished with intricate silverwork.
The hair stick plays both a decorative and functional role, used to hold a hairdo in place. Combs like these were not used to brush hair. Rather, they were accessories placed on top of buns and other elaborate hairstyles.
The artistry of this set deserves to be recognized today. They would look brilliant paired with modern clothing. Alternatively, you could display it on your bedroom shelf and let it speak for itself.
