This is a plate which was placed underneath potteries as they baked in a kiln. These stones are originally made from either pottery, terra-cotta, or stone slabs. However, after years of use spent beneath bowls, dishes, and vases, the slabs have been transfigured by the excess glaze that drip down and cover their surfaces. Rarely are the plates ever retired from their kilns, unless the kiln itself must be dismantled.
The result is remarkable.
When used as a pedestal, plates like this one have the gentleness and strength to accept and embrace a piece of artwork set upon it. Just as Brancusi crafted elegant pedestals for his sculptures, a pedestal like this one enhances the beauty of the work upon it. These plates have lived for a long time in the fire, supporting many potteries while they were baked again and again. Resulting solely from chance, the beauty and character of these plates arises without artistic intention from the magic of use and time.
