The forged candle stand has a whimsical, animal-like look. A few photographs of it were taken by Mikio Matsuo, an artist whose works are in SFMOMA's permanent collection. Matsuo saw the the hidden character of the stand and captured it, or rather made it alive. It became a collaboration between the artist and the anonymous master craftsman. 200 years later, the photographer saw his fellow creator's mastery through the finder of his camera.
