The pattern of this vessel has an interesting name. It is called Yoroke-mon - (staggering pattern). It might be inspired by the staggering steps of a drunk person, staggering this way and that way. As a design, it is brilliant. It has a casual, nonchalant air that can only be created by an excellent artisan. It was made for the Muko-Dsuke dish (one of the courses of formal Japanese dinner ). Originally, it was made as a set of 5 in the late 1800s, but now only one survived.
How to use it? After a hot summer working day, I would enjoy the vessel with cold Belgian beer. How refreshing it might be! Beer mug? Is there a rule? Or, how about a big latte on a cold, snowy day, holding the 220-240-year-old bowl with both hands?? Or how about displaying it on a pedestal? The vessel is waiting for your creativity and imagination.
