This is a very mysterious painting. At first glance, it is a seascape with three ships and a shore.  Is it? There is more to it. There is one detailed ship, water, land, and two faraway boats; each is treated differently. The land with a cliff is depicted rather organically, as if it were a part of a human body, and you even feel the warmth. The detailed boat with people is painted realistically with excellent crisp brush strokes. Two faraway boats with only two brush strokes express the misty atmosphere. And the water around the big boat is with small strokes, and we can hear the soft ripples. The artist, Oshin, gathered several different elements with different approaches and presented us with a remarkably enigmatic painting. It requires time to connect with it. It only opens up little by little.

Ōshin is the third generation of Maruyama school. He is the grandson of the legendary Maruyama Ōkyo. Because of the pressure, sometimes his works look rigid and too perfect. However, when he is left to his creativity, he paints excellent paintings, such as this one.
