Taimei Morino is known as a contemporary artist and a successful one at that. His artworks are included in museum collections across the world. This flower vase tells an intriguing story. The conscious effort of making “art” and his memory and a familiar vision of flower vase merged and guided his hands for this creation.
The vase hearkens to Morino’s upbringing in the third generation of a family of potters, to his long and instinctive involvement with the feeling of clay. As a child, he likely wandered into his father’s studio only to be thrown a ball of clay to occupy his curious, active hands. There, the life spanning relationship between Morino’s hands and clay began. It is the medium Morino knows as well as his flesh and blood. The result is an impressive, whimsical yet solemn work of art disguised as a flower vase. AND it is a great flower vase as well. Throw in a bunch of flowers from your garden and they, the vase and flowers, act as if they have known each other for decades. That is the magic that we can witness when Morino creates objects with clay.
